Trip Planning FAQs

The most popular golf trip in Ireland is 7-10 days. 14 if you'd like to do more sightseeing. 7-10 days will give you the chance to play 5 or 6 rounds at some of Ireland's best golf courses while comfortably travelling between venues.

Ireland's golf landscape is as rich and varied as its history. North, South, East and West all possess world class courses and culture waiting to be explored.

Use our golf towns page to find your perfect base. Filter by proximity to top courses, food, culture and more.

The golden rule is to aim for at least 2 or 3 nights in each location. That gives you the chance to play incredible courses across the island without wasting your trip wrestling luggage.

Ask yourself what kind of trip you want?

  1. Bucket list trip - you want to knock off as many big name tracks as possible and are willing to travel as much as needed to get them.
  2. Golf & leisure trip - you'd like to play some big name courses and are happy to mix in some hidden gems to spend more time exploring your base.

Your answer to the above will decide how many locations you should stay in. For a bucket list trip you'll typically need to travel more. Famous courses are exceptionally popular so even on a well planned trip you may not get all the tee times you want - meaning you'll need to travel further between top venues.

Ideally, 12-18 months. Wait! Before you give up - that's the window if you want tee times at marquee courses like Royal County Down and Royal Portrush. The good news is that you can still plan an incredible Irish golf trip in as little as 3-6 months.

Group size will typically help decide this.

Premium chauffeured vehicles: For groups of 5 to 30. Typically booked via premium golf tour operators, these are dedicated vehicles that can take you to every course and stop throughout your trip. Travel in pure comfort with premium leather seats, tables, mini-fridges, electronics and ample space for all your golf gear.

Self-drive / short-hire rentals: If you don't need all the bells and whistles or want the adventure of getting pleasantly lost by yourself (genuinely a wonderful way to see the countryside) mini-buses for up to 8 people are widely available across the Island. Hireable with or without a driver and can be rented using a standard driving licence.

Taxis are also readily available and a convenient choice for a stay & play around Dublin. Apps like FREENOW (by Lyft) and Uber are most commonly used.

Heli-golf: The ultimate Irish golfing experience and an increasingly popular option. Helicopter flight allows you to play 2 top-tier courses per day by cutting down travel time. Up to 8 passengers can fly together. Take in breathtaking views of the Emerald Isle before landing on or right beside the course with your clubs on-board. Booked via specialist providers with curated courses included.

There's a famous saying here in Ireland - "If you don't like the weather, wait fifteen minutes".

Part of the joy of playing Irish golf courses is the challenge presented by the sunlight, breeze, humidity and yes, sometimes rain (often all in one round). The good news is that if you plan a trip and get incredibly unlucky for courses to close due to weather - you will typically be offered a refund or alternative tee-time.

Since Irish golf courses are built to stand the weather, your group should be prepared for all conditions (it's not uncommon to see waterproofs and wooly hats in June).

*This site provides informational guides only; all bookings, tee times, and weather refund policies are subject solely to the terms of your specific golf course.

It very much depends on the course. For the top-tier locations, contact the course directly for availability. Check the suggested timelines above in your planning.

Even with a full planning window, many top courses have limited availability for direct bookings but will hold tee-times for partner agencies. So using a golf tour operator can sometimes get you access to courses that are otherwise unavailable for your preferred dates.

Many championship courses also allow booking directly online, especially parkland tracks. Use the booking links on the course detail pages on our site to be taken directly to the right place.

*A note on handicaps: Many of Ireland's best golf courses enforce strict handicap limits on visitors. Often 24 for men and 36 for women. This ensures pace of play and protects the course. If you have any players in your group without a handicap, ensure they get one well in advance of travelling. Starters can and will refuse players from teeing off if they do not meet requirements.

For full green fees, check each course detail page on GemTees. Every course includes up-to-date indicative green fee information once you explore the full course details.

You can filter courses by green fee price on our course finder page.

Caddies are typically available for higher end championship courses - particularly links. Caddies can be arranged at the below courses. If you'd like a caddie for a course not on the list, contact the course directly and often a local caddy can be arranged with notice.

Note: even for the below courses notice must be booked in advance - caddies cannot reliably be provided on the day. It is customary in Ireland to tip your caddy.

Yes! and many people do, with one caveat - while you can absolutely plan and book an incredible Irish golf trip to your tastes, some courses can be genuinely hard to access. Usually the big names in links golf such as Royal County Down, Portrush, Portmarnock and those in the South West.

Bespoke golf travel agents often have reserved tee-times at these courses and may be able to help.

If you'd rather not go via an agent and some of your preferred courses are unavailable, use our course finder to filter links courses ranked between 11th-60th in Ireland - these are often top quality hidden gems with more availability and bookable directly.
